This Jantzen Audio air-core inductor has an inductance of 0.42 mH, a DCR of 0.65 ohm and a wire diameter of 0.63 mm. It is intended for building and upgrading passive loudspeaker crossovers. The absence of a magnetic core eliminates core saturation and allows the inductor to remain linear during dynamic changes in the music signal.
The model can be used in tweeter, midrange and woofer filters as well as RLC correction circuits and loudspeaker impedance-compensation networks. Precisely specified inductance and winding resistance make it easier to match the component correctly to the crossover design.
Air-core inductors are among the most widely used coil types in high-quality passive loudspeaker crossovers. The absence of a metal core means there is no magnetic saturation or hysteresis, both of which can affect linearity at high signal levels.
The winding is made from high-quality class 1B copper wire with enamel insulation and a thermally bonding coating. Its compact self-supporting structure reduces movement between turns and makes secure mounting on a crossover board easier.
Wire diameter directly affects DCR. A thicker conductor reduces power loss and the inductor's influence on loudspeaker sensitivity, which makes it particularly useful in woofer filters. A thinner conductor is suitable for correction circuits and sections carrying lower current.
The absence of a magnetic core supports linear operation even with highly dynamic signals. In a properly designed crossover this can help preserve accurate transient reproduction, fine dynamic detail and natural decay. The final result still depends on the complete filter design, DCR and the parameters of the connected driver.
The 0.42 mH inductance allows the component to be used in filters requiring this specific value. Its winding resistance of 0.65 ohm should be included in the crossover design because it affects signal level, damping and the electrical response of the connected loudspeaker.
The 0.63 mm wire provides a balance between resistance, coil dimensions and cost. This model is therefore particularly suitable for midrange, band-pass and selected woofer filter sections. This resistance should be included in the crossover simulation or design because it affects signal level and filter Q.
Secure the inductor to the crossover board with cable ties, hot-melt adhesive or a flexible mounting adhesive suitable for electronic components. Do not pass a steel screw through the centre of the winding because ferromagnetic material can change the inductance.
When two or more inductors are installed on the same board, position their axes at 90 degrees to one another. This reduces magnetic coupling and the risk of one inductor affecting another.
Avoid prolonged heating of the leads during soldering. Before installation, it is also worth checking the actual inductance and DCR, especially when building a matched pair of crossovers for the left and right loudspeakers.
