Jantzen Audio Iron Core Wire Coil 2.5 mH / DCR 0.52 ohm ohm / 0.80 mm wire

This Jantzen Audio iron-core wire inductor has an inductance of 2.5 mH, a DCR of 0.52 ohm and a wire diameter of 0.8 mm. It is primarily intended for woofer and midrange crossover sections. The Permite core provides high inductance in smaller dimensions and with lower resistance than a comparable air-core coil.

The cylindrical construction without end discs is a practical choice for new projects, repairs and crossover upgrades where reasonable cost, compact size and reduced power loss are important.

Description

The Permite core increases the inductance of the winding, so fewer turns are required than in an air-core coil of the same value. This reduces component size and helps keep DCR under control.

The cylindrical version has no side discs. Its simple and economical construction works particularly well in woofer and midrange filters when the installation does not require the smallest possible coil diameter.

The winding uses class 1B copper wire with enamel insulation and a heat-bonding coating. Permite has lower hysteresis than a conventional ferrite core, although core saturation must still be considered at high current levels.

Application

  • low-pass filters for woofers,
  • band-pass filters for midrange drivers,
  • crossovers requiring higher inductance with controlled DCR,
  • repair and upgrade of factory loudspeaker crossovers,
  • DIY projects where performance-to-cost ratio is important.

Effect of construction on sound

Lower resistance than a comparable air-core inductor can help preserve energy and control in the woofer section while reducing sensitivity loss. The result depends on correct DCR matching and current level; operation beyond the linear range of the core can increase distortion.

Why choose this model?

The 2.5 mH inductance allows the component to be used in filters requiring this specific value. Its winding resistance of 0.52 ohm should be included in the crossover design because it affects signal level, damping and the electrical response of the connected loudspeaker.

The 0.8 mm wire helps achieve the specified DCR while maintaining compact dimensions. This model is therefore particularly suitable for woofer and midrange filters requiring low DCR in moderate dimensions. This resistance should be included in the crossover simulation or design because it affects signal level and filter Q.

Key features

  • cylindrical Permite core without side discs,
  • high inductance in compact dimensions,
  • class 1B copper wire with enamel insulation,
  • heat-bonding layer that stabilises the winding,
  • inductance tolerance of ±3%,
  • solderable at up to 390°C for a maximum of 8 seconds,
  • breakdown voltage compliant with IEC 60317-0-1.

Installation

Secure the inductor firmly to the crossover board so that its weight does not load the leads. Cable ties, hot-melt adhesive or flexible electronic mounting adhesive can be used.

When several inductors are installed on one board, position their axes at 90 degrees and maintain as much spacing as practical. This reduces magnetic coupling and the influence of stray fields.

In high-power filters, verify the expected current and allow space for heat dissipation. When replacing an existing inductor, compare both inductance and DCR.
