This Jantzen Audio Litz Wire Wax air-core inductor has an inductance of 0.47 mH, a DCR of 0.23 ohm and a 7x0.5 mm Litz-wire conductor. It combines a coreless design with multi-strand Litz wire and wax impregnation that stabilises the winding.
The model is intended for high-quality midrange and tweeter filters, correction networks and designs where reduced skin effect and lower winding vibration are important.
The Litz-wire conductor consists of 7 individually insulated strands, each with a diameter of 0.5 mm. This construction distributes current more evenly than a single conductor of comparable cross-section.
After winding, the inductor is impregnated with paraffin wax. The hardened winding is less susceptible to movement and vibration, while the air-core construction eliminates magnetic saturation and hysteresis.
The combination of Litz wire and wax impregnation is intended primarily for high-quality hi-fi crossovers where mechanical stability, low conductor loss at higher frequencies and premium construction are important.
The multi-strand conductor reduces the influence of skin effect, while wax impregnation stabilises the winding. In a properly designed filter this can support clean, precise and effortless reproduction of mid and high frequencies with good detail retrieval. The final result still depends on inductance, DCR and the other crossover components.
The 0.47 mH inductance allows the component to be used in filters requiring this specific value. Its winding resistance of 0.23 ohm should be included in the crossover design because it affects signal level, damping and the electrical response of the connected loudspeaker.
The 7x0.5 mm Litz-wire conductor combines several individually insulated strands for improved current distribution. This model is therefore particularly suitable for midrange and selected woofer filters where low high-frequency conductor losses are important. Its low series resistance helps preserve loudspeaker sensitivity and control in the filter section.
Secure the inductor with a wide cable tie or a holder with a soft protective pad. The mounting should not excessively compress the wax-impregnated winding or stress the leads.
Do not pass a steel screw through the centre of the coil. When several inductors are installed on one board, position their axes at 90 degrees and maintain as much spacing as practical.
Avoid prolonged heating of the leads during soldering. For matched crossover pairs, check the actual inductance and DCR before installation.
