This Jantzen Audio iron-core inductor with discs has an inductance of 7 mH, a DCR of 2.3 ohm and a wire diameter of 0.4 mm. It is designed for crossovers requiring high inductance, low resistance and compact dimensions.
The Permite core with side discs concentrates the magnetic field and reduces the overall coil diameter. This makes the component suitable for compact woofer and midrange crossover boards.
The bobbin construction combines a Permite core with discs on both sides of the winding. This provides the required inductance with a shorter conductor and a smaller diameter than an equivalent air-core inductor.
The side discs control winding geometry and reduce the area affected by stray magnetic fields. This is useful in complex crossover networks where several components must fit onto a limited board area.
The winding is made from class 1B copper wire with enamel insulation and a heat-bonding coating. As with any magnetic-core inductor, core saturation should be considered at very high current levels.
The combination of high inductance and moderate resistance can help preserve energy and sensitivity in the bass section. The side discs reduce interaction with nearby components and support predictable crossover operation. The final result depends on correct DCR matching and operation below core saturation.
The 7 mH inductance allows the component to be used in filters requiring this specific value. Its winding resistance of 2.3 ohm should be included in the crossover design because it affects signal level, damping and the electrical response of the connected loudspeaker.
The 0.4 mm wire combines compact construction with a resistance suitable for this model. This model is therefore particularly suitable for high-inductance bass filters with limited installation space. The relatively high winding resistance may be part of the intended design, but its effect on loudspeaker sensitivity and response should be checked before substitution.
Secure the inductor firmly to the crossover board using cable ties or a flexible mounting adhesive. The mounting method should not stress the leads or deform the side discs.
Despite the controlled stray field, neighbouring inductors should still be positioned at 90 degrees and separated where possible. Avoid installing the component directly next to steel parts.
In high-current circuits, verify core saturation limits and provide ventilation. When replacing a component in an existing filter, both inductance and DCR must match the intended crossover design.
